Maine Track Club member, Mike Brooks to run 72 hour race

                    www.acrosstheyears.com

I am running a 72 hour race starting Saturday the 29th and ending New
Years Day. You can learn about the race and follow my progress or lack of it
on the above website. Even if you are not interested in what I am doing you
should check out this great website. My goals are 75 miles day 1 , 70 day 2
and 56 day 3 for 201 miles. I will be very surprised if I do this. The last
time I did this race I ran 183 miles but I was younger then and did not have
a hamstring injury.
You can also send me a message during the race and there will be a mailbox
on the course where I can pick it up. Info for this will be on the website
by race start. I hope to hear from all of you during the race. If I am
behind on my mileage be sure to send me a nasty message telling me so. This
might motivate me enough to pick up the pace.
At midnight New Years Eve think of all the fun I am having on my third day
of circling a 500 meter track sipping champagne with my fellow runners in
the Arizona desert!

http://www.acrosstheyears.com/cgi-bin/livesplits.cgi?y=2007&rid=348

Cheers and a Happy New Year,
                  Mike

MTC Roaster Run Group Blog

This is an interesting running blog.  It started in Jan 2006.  It currently has only 25 members. Interested runners can sign on to the blog and post messages and/or photos and view messages and photos which have been posted.  Sandy Walton has hosted this event for a number of years.  The Roaster Run has been very well attended event but the fact that the weekly event also has it own web site where members can also meet in cyberspace may not be widely known around the world.

See you are the races.

She only runs a few races a year. She did  race while in college.  I can not say that I know her but Don Penta did get a photo of her in 2006 at the Maine Half.  Since she is interested in running she might want to join the MECTA as the City of Portland has a team. She might even be interest in joining the Maine Track Team as well.

Attention Aroostook Runners!

The Musterd Calendar will no longer be published by WebMusterd Dave Rand as of December 31, 2007. I am "retiring" after doing the printed and web based calendar for more than two decades. Hopefully a club member will be picking up this site for 2008, with a different address. If notified by Dec. 31 the new site will be posted here.

A web site can be a great tool for a club to reach their membership.  Often a web site services more than the club membership.  If you are a runner living in Maine and have not joining a running club you are not getting ALL you can get out of the sport. And on the other side of the coin you should also be giving back to the sport as well.  Please see a list of the names of club clubs on the RRCA & Maine USATF web sites.  Now do the right thing.  If you are a member of a running club ask a friend to join your club. Often people do not take the first step and join a group because they are fear hey will not kbow anyone in the group.

You can always contact me if you like. DavidColbyYoung@aol.com

This is one of the small things that a track club does. We keep track for members' race results.

Please check the Maine Track Club web site for other benifits and how you might help support the sport of running in Maine.  We welcome and need all comers. These photos were backed up and stored on a CD for use in the News*Run, the publication of the Maine Track Club.

Don Penta took photos of this event also.  You will have to contact him for information on his collections.  We were only posting selective photos of MTC members in 2004 & 2005.  It was not until photos were given to us on CD that be posted all the photos.

School of Social Work study of Portland homeless focus of news stories
Thomas McLaughlinA study on the cost effectiveness of affordable housing for the homeless conducted by Thomas Chalmers McLaughlin, associate professor, and Nancy Shore, assistant professor, both  in the School of Social Work, continues to garner media coverage. On Oct. 30, 2007, WCSH 6 TV did a story on the study in connection with a conference on affordable housing held in Portland. Earlier stories appeared on Oct. 3 and Sept. 20 in the Portland Press Herald. McLaughlin and Shore have been working  through the UNE School of Social Work's center for research and program evaluation with Shalom House and Preble Street Resource Center on a study to investigate the costs associated with homelessness and supported housing. The project summary suggests that supportive housing for chronically homeless people actually costs less in the long run than the costs associated with homelessness, e.g.  police involvement, jail nights, shelter nights, emergency room visits. The study will now move out of Portland and explore the same question on a statewide basis. Commissioned by the Maine State Housing Authority, the study can be found at its website.

On my way home I saw a lady pulling a wagon on US Rt. 26 just North of the toll road exit at West Falmouth crossing.   I stopped to take a few photos & hoped to find out where his lady was going. If you are interested on why she was pulling a 300 pound wagon, you should read her blog.  I let her look at my copy of  Delorme's "The Maine Atlas & Gazetteer"  It is my understanding that she was heading for Canada and Rt #9 would take her in that direction.  I hope I pointed her in the correct direction.

We have about 100 G of photos as of Nov 2007.   These photos were taken with a Sony 1.2 px and by a person just learning how to run the camera.  We hope you might enjoy the flash to the past 2004.

Patriots Day Race on Veterans Day

Portland Boys & Girls Club 5 Miler? :

The Boys and Girls Club Alumni Association has decided to run a modified version of the Patriots Day 5-Miler, which was canceled this year because of heavy rain and flooding in Portland. The rescheduled race will be held on Veterans Day -- Monday, Nov. 12. The race will begin at noon on the Eastern Prom Trail near East End Beach and will include a loop around the Back Cove Trail. No entry fee will be charged, but everyone who intends to run, whether or not you preregistered for the April race, will still need to fill out the attached entry form and bring it with you to the race.

    No Chip! No Time!

Well, I have heard that "No Chip! No Time!"  Well, this statement is often true but I guess not always true.  I have in the past made a "pest" of myself to many of the time services in Maine & New England.  I am one of the photojournalist at the finish line taking photos. While I look over the photos & conpare them to the resullts, I see many of the mistakes which are made. Often the errors are made by volunteers and/or the runners not following the rules which have been clearly made before each races.  One of these errors would be that runners forget to attach their chip to their foot.  The chip system might be faster but it does not record all.  The following story was published in the www.MDIslander.com which I believe to the the exception and not the rule which most time services see as their job.  This type of correction is going the extra mile.

    Runner restored by photo finish

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — It was a photo finish of sorts.

For one competitor in the sixth running of the Mount Desert Island Marathon recently, news photos taken at the finish line have helped him get his name, and his 57th-place finish, into the record books.

According to race officials, David Feltwell of Virginia apparently forgot to put a computer chip on his shoe that would have automatically recorded his time as he crossed the finish line. “I did not realize my mistake until I crossed the finish line,” Mr. Feltwell said in an e-mail to race officials.

The fact that Mr. Feltwell, who was running his second MDI Marathon, was not in the results was discovered when the Islander planned to use a photo of the runner celebrating at the finish in the paper, but reporters could not find his bib number in the officialresults.

The photo that appeared on the front page of last week’s Islander, as well as other photos taken just before and after, helped race officials determine when Mr. Feltwell finished. The paper supplied the images to official race timer Bill Teschek of Granite Race Services who made the final determination.

“David, I’ve given you a time of 3:27:29, as the clock shows you past the finish line at 3:27:28 and we always round up,” Mr. Teschek said in an e-mail to Mr. Feltwell last week.

Mr. Feltwell, who works in the Pentagon, is an uncle to Mount Desert Island triathlete and runner Nigel Storer.

However, what is good news for Mr. Feltwell may come as a disappointment to the more than 600 participants who finished after him. Their places were all adjusted down by one when the official record was corrected.
